The Nazis invaded Poland in September 1939, an act mirrored by the Soviet Union on the eastern borders, the result of the Hitler-Stalin Pact.
The city of Lvov, with the third largest Jewish community in pre-war Poland, fell to the Soviets and remained under their control until June 1941. During that time, the Jewish population increased from around 100,000 to 160,000 as many fled from German-controlled Poland to a city where they officially had equal status.
But, with the change of political heart by Hitler and the invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941, so the status of Jews changed with it. Humiliation,moncler, deprivation and, for the huge majority, death quickly followed.
But a few did survive. And In Darkness is the true story of fourteen from the Lvov ghetto who, post-war, became known as Socha’s Jews, helped, as they had been, by Leopold Socha.

City sewer worker and part-time crook,veste moncler, as the Nazis rounded up the ghetto dwellers for deportation to the death camps, Socha agrees for a sizeable fee to help the Chiger family and a few of their friends.
Self-interest is his initial motive. But, gradually over the next 14 months, a close bond forms between them all. Even when the money runs out, Socha continues to forage for extra food to ensure the captives are fed.
Multi-layered, In Darkness explores the various relationships between the main characters both above and below ground. The claustrophobic darkness of the sewers, the fear in the city streets of both Nazis and nationalist Ukranians supporting the invading army are all superbly captured by director Agnieszka Holland.
A quiet intensity
No stranger to Holocaust themed features – Oscar-nominated Europa, Europa (199 – Holland skilfully avoids sensationalism or over-emotive presentation. Instead, she allows the tale and the horrors of the rat-infested, stench-ridden darkness to tell its story. Men, women and children survive on narrow ledges for 14 months fed on little more than onions and potatoes.
No sunlight filters through: only rain and the threat of floods infiltrate their darkened home. But the main threat comes from Ukrainian search parties, which Socha, as the senior city sewer worker, ensures they never find them.
It’s a difficult film – the pace is deliberately slow, mirroring the lives of the fourteen people forced to live underground. And in spite of scenes on the streets of Lvov or the small attic home of Socha, the tone is sombre,doudoune moncler, the palette muted, the lighting dimmed. It makes for a deep, reflective feature which at times is deeply moving but also, at times, cinematically banal and inert.
A superb performance by Robert Wieckiewicz as the engaging, humorous, blunt Socha is the standout in a feature that occasionally needs that emotional manipulation Agnieszka Holland has so painfully avoided.
Somewhat surprisingly, In Darkness joined A Separation (Iran), Bullhead (Belgium), Footnote (Israel) and Monsieur Lazhar (Canada) as one of the nominations for the 2012 best foreign language film. It lost out to the Iranian entry, but it was felt that the Polish feature, along with Bullhead, had been undeservedly shortlisted.

Lingo2Word
Lingo2Word allows you to translate English to texting lingo and vice versa, it also offers a dictionary for learning new terms. This site only allows a limited number of translations, once you reached their maximum you either have to pay or wait a week to try again. There are pop ups and advertisements on this site, if you don’t want to see them, the site says you can pay a service to block them. This site is geared more to attract teens then parents, but it’s useful for its slang content.
Kids are typing, tapping and texting away these days and they have created all sorts of shorthand ranging from acronyms to emoticons. Parents should do their best to keep up on texting slang so they can decipher what messages their kids are sending and getting. It helps parents with knowing what’s going on in their children’s lives and it better ensures their health and well being as well.
