Apologies for being late with this. I’m behind with the travel news (I’ve been on my travels) and this story has just come to my attention. Two weeks ago polo ralph lauren pas cher, Richard Chartres, the Bishop of London polo ralph lauren, said that flying off on holiday is sinful, because carbon emissions from aircraft contribute to global warming. I may be in trouble here, because I read about this declaration on a cheap flight back from Europe. Is that sulphur I can smell?
The bish is not happy about the way we all fly off to foreign climes at the drop of a ?29.99 airfare. ‘Making selfish choices such as flying on holiday or buying a large car are a symptom of sin,’ he says. ‘Sin is not just a restricted list of moral mistakes. It is living a life turned in on itself where people ignore the consequences of their actions.’
Stern stuff. And nothing to do with me, you may think, if, like many people, you pay no heed to matters religious. But can we really just dismiss the statement as the babbling of a bishop unconcerned that the Church’s opinion cuts less ice than once it did?
Because the key word here is not ‘sin’ ? something you may or may not believe in, depending on your religious persuasion ? but ‘selfish’. Is it irresponsible to fly to Krakow for two nights knowing that air travel harms the environment, and that buying a ticket aids the growth of an industry that has expanded hugely in the last decade?
It’s estimated that air travel generates 700 million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year ? the same amount as produced by all human activity in Africa in the same period. What to do? Maybe the near future will see extra taxes on jet fuel to make flights less affordable. Maybe there will be quotas on the number of miles we can fly each year.
But the obvious answer is that we stop getting on planes. And I’ll be happy to do this ? when train tickets are as reasonable as budget air fares longchamp pliage Overeager fan rushes at Robert De, and the sailing time to New York from London is six hours (and I don’t have to ‘take off’ from Southampton).
Because ? and here’s the rub ? I like planes moncler pas cher, and the freedom they offer. Since the budget airline boom, I’ve been to Prague, Budapest and Krakow ? cities I couldn’t easily visit before the advent of cheap flights. I’m loath to give up this freedom, even though I’m aware of the environmental pay-off. I doubt I’m alone in this attitude.
So am I selfish? I guess so. But sinful? That, as I said, is a matter of personal opinion. Although sac longchamp pas cher, when I first read the bishop’s comments, my brain did conjure up a mental image: I’ve died, risen to the gates of heaven, and am met by St Peter. He checks my ID, and pulls up my life record on his computer (yes, St Peter has a computer).
‘Excellent,’ he says, in a low biblical voice. ‘You haven’t murdered anyone, you haven’t stolen anything, you haven’t coveted your neighbour’s ass, and, short of having posters of frankly rubbish indie bands on your wall when you were 16 longchamp pas cher, you haven’t worshipped any graven images. You may pass.’
But then he frowns. ‘Wait,’ he growls. ‘It says here that in 2006 you took cheap flights to Italy, Turkey, Germany and Spain.’ He sighs. ‘Sorry Mr Leadbeater. Go downstairs, please.’ Cue the opening of a trapdoor, bursts of fire \
